Thermaltake Element nVidia Gaming VL200L1W2Z Review

I purchased this case on another site that sells a lot of computer parts since I was building a new machine. They also had an “un-boxing video” for the case. Simply put, this case really lives up to the hype and is worth the money. I’ve been building PC’s since the early 90’s and WOW have cases (and other components) come a long way. So, I’ll get right to the pro’s and cons of this case…

Pros
1. Cooling – The case has MASSIVE fans in it to move air, but is still quiet. larger fans spinning at lower RPMs move more air with less noise.
2. Options – Water Cooling. There are 2 ports on the back plus some included grommets for water lines. There is also a spot to mount a reservoir bottle. Very thought out.
3. Options – Ducting. Has ducting for moving air across a triple SLI card setup. I only have 1 video card (GTX-580 that takes up 3 slots on its own), so I’m not using the ducting, but it has multiple pieces plus another fan as well. So if you’re building a crazy graphics system with nothing else, and you have a motherboard with a layout that will accommodate that, this is the case.
4. Convenience – All of the ports for USB, eSATA, Headphone, Mic and the Power, reset buttons and fan control knob are on top in the front for easy access. If only my motherboard had support for 4 USB ports (it only supports 3 from the connections on the board).
5. Modular – the fan location and 3.5″ mounting block can be moved and shifted to accommodate whatever setup you need. And it has enough 5.25″ bays for DVD/Bluray drive(s) or other components needing panel access.
6. Better Design – This locates the Power Supply in the bottom of the case. This is the first case I’ve owned that does this and I will never buy another one that puts it on the top. The power supply mounting options are fantastic as well. There is a slide that will hold whatever size PSU you are using. I happen to be using an OCZ ZX Series 1250W Fully-Modular 80PLUS Gold High Performance Power Supply which is also black and goes great with the case. That PSU is great as well, but this is a review about just the case.
7. Cosmetic – Everything in this case is black (Except for the nVidia green accents of course). The inside is black. Even the screws are black! It really makes it a polished product.
8. Cosmetic – It’s not really all that green. So don’t worry that you’ll have some huge green glowing monster. The fans actually light up blue. Supposedly you can change the color, but I did not see how with quickly glancing over the manual. Also, I kinda like the blue lighting.
9. Viewing window – It has a pretty small viewing window which is likely due to structural integrity of the swing out door. This is a personal preference to put it in Pros because frankly, I don’t need to see inside my case all the time and you can still see through the clear/blue lighted 200mm fan on the side as well.
10. Easy Access – The side fan is connected to power through contacts that are engaged when the door is closed. There is no dangling cable that needs to be tucked away while closing the door.
11. Safety – All of the edges of the metal are smooth. Every time I go inside a computer case to work on something, I end up cutting my finger or hand on the sharp cut edges of the case somehow. That is not so with this case. All of the edges are smoothed and the black painted surface really makes it a pain-free experience.
12. No PSU – You might think this would be a con, but the reality is that a PSU needs to be chosen based on the system as a whole and most units would be replaced with the one you go with anyway as the included ones are typically garbage. If one was included, it would have just added to the cost of the case.

Cons (And I have to be really nit-picky for these)
1. Price – It is kind of expensive. But I feel the case is definitely worth it.
2. Heavy – I don’t know how it could be lighter. Maybe use titanium or some exotic metal, but that would make the price even higher. So basically every full tower case will be heavy, but I had to list it.
3. Size – It’s pretty big. I thought my previous case was tall. This one probably stands about 2 or 3 inches taller. You will definitely get used to it though.
4. Branding – I’m using an nVidia video card in my setup. But if you’re going to be using an ATI card, then this is kind of like transplanting a Honda engine inside a Toyota.
5. Cosmetic – the viewing window on the side is tinted green. It would be fine if all my fans were green, but they’re not. However, it doesn’t look too bad. And if you changed your fans to green, then this wouldn’t be a con of yours, but a pro.

Overall, I’d say this case is really solid. My cons are more nit-picky and personal preference. I gave it 5 stars since I’m not sure how much better it could really be made and if it was better, you would get diminished returns from this point. Hopefully, this is helpful if you’re comparing this case to another one or if you’re just not comfortable spending this much on a case that doesn’t have a power supply. This is definitely worth the money.…Read More
